Free affiliate programs provide a suitable starting point for a beginner on the internet and have become common place among internet marketers aspiring to make money online. Apart from the obvious reason of being free to join, you do not need to create your own product or have specific knowledge or experience to become a part of. In addition, all the logistics are taken care of including payments, product delivery and customer service.
Free to join affiliate programs can be pay per sale or pay per lead networks. Pay per sale affiliate networks compensate their affiliates only when a sale has been generated by people they recommended the products/services to. While, pay per lead/action networks reward their affiliates based on the individual completing certain actions like filling a form. They do not have to make a purchase of the product, sometimes only an email address will suffice.
How do you make money online from affiliate programs?
Research and Choose your niche.
Research the market to find a suitable niche. A niche is a segment of the market that focuses on a particular type of product for certain category of people. Once you have made a decision, making sure that your choice is one with rabid buyers and less competition, promote related products to your target group.
Research and Choose your affiliate program
You should choose a network based on reliability,support and quality. Reliability in the sense that the network must make payments promptly have a stable server so that they don’t go offline randomly.
As for support, they should be able to provide all the marketing materials you need for promoting products on their network in terms of banners, email follow-up mails e.t.c. and be ready to answer your questions and attempt to solve your problems when you are confronted with one or more of them.
And lastly, they must be uncompromising when it comes to quality.
Start a blog or Create a website
You can start with a free blog at blogger.com or a word press blog hosted by a reliable web hosting company, on your own domain.
Populate your new blog or website with original content laden with relevant keywords and focused on your niche. This will help you rank high on the search engines. This means people can easily find you on Google, Yahoo Search and Bing.
Promote Your website.
This is a very critical stage of marketing online as you won’t make a dime without traffic. Your next task is to drive targeted traffic to your website or blog by writing articles and posting them to article directories, building one way back links to your site by commenting on other blogs related to your site and making valid contributions on forums; engage in social bookmarking and make sure you keep adding valuable content to your blog or website.
And as more and more people visit your site it translate to more and more affiliate sales.

I have so far tried Clickbank with some success where I have been able to make more than hunnred dollars every month selling few products as an affiliate. I will give a try to free affiliate program as well and if I get some success with them, I will let you know

Just remember when promoting your site in social bookmarks, be creative when writing articles so a lot of people will vote and be ahead of the competition.

I find it’s easier to make money in over crowded niches, because there are way more buyers and people searching for all types of different keywords.
The trick is to create a better sales page and really target those money keywords, you’ll be surprised by how many untouched keywords there are with no competition in big niches.

Yes, I agree that affiliate marketing is the great equalizer online. I a have had my ups and downs over the years but all in all it is a great way to make some extra cash.I can also say that the guys at wealthy affiliate are very good and put a lot into the product they offer .

I’ve dabbled in some affiliate marketing before, but I didn’t find it as rewarding as people have told me. I did everything I was told and put some effort into it but it just didn’t bring in as much as I expected it to. I’m guessing I chose the wrong product as I can see how affiliate marketing can really work. I’ll try my hand at it again once I get some things out of the way.

I agree with what adam is saying. Don’t sepnd your time with companies that dont support you or increase your bonuses when you increase your sales. A lot of affiliate programs will disapear, and then your hard work will be gone.
I dabble a bit in affiliate marketing, and I do make a few bucks. But it is hard work. Picking a profitable niche is almost as difficult as marketing your site.
